In this article, we’ll explain why our brakes sometimes squeak and give you a simple guide on how to get rid of the noise.
Why do brakes squeak?
Squeaking is pure physics. The hard metal compound of the brake pad rubs against the steel brake rotor, naturally creating vibrations. These are then transferred throughout the system, and our ears perceive them as that annoying high-pitched sound. Although this friction occurs every time you squeeze the brake lever, the noise intensity isn’t always the same. Certain situations amplify these vibrations to the extreme. So, when do brakes scream the loudest?

When they are cold: Before the metal compound reaches its proper operating temperature.

When they are dirty or wet: Moisture, dust, and mud instantly change the friction properties.

When they are “glazed”: If you bedded in the new brakes poorly or too aggressively, a hard, shiny layer formed on the surface. This layer squeaks unpleasantly and reduces braking power (the solution is simply to take the pads out and lightly scuff them with fine sandpaper).
The warranty covers actual mechanical failures – a cracked brake caliper or leaking brake fluid. The sound profile of a brake pad that otherwise stops you safely and reliably simply cannot be claimed under warranty.
Why doesn't a regular car squeak while a scooter does?
You might be thinking: “But my car doesn’t squeak! It only makes noise when the brakes are rusted or worn out!” You are right, but you are comparing apples to oranges. The physics are the same, but the construction differs dramatically:

Tuning fork vs. anvil: A scooter’s brake rotor is a thin, roughly 2.5 mm slice of steel. As soon as a hard pad presses against it, it rings out like a tuning fork. A car’s rotor is a massive, heavy chunk of cooled cast iron. This huge mass simply absorbs the vibrations.

Dampening cushions: Car brake pads have a rubberized anti-vibration shim on the back, and mechanics apply a special anti-squeal paste to the contact areas during installation. On a scooter, a dry steel piston pushes directly against the dry steel backing of the brake pad.

Race cars squeak too: Due to strict noise regulations, standard passenger cars rarely come from the factory with pure metal (sintered) brake pads. But try standing next to a rally track. Because of the extreme temperatures, race cars use these aggressive metal brakes – and they squeak under braking just as loudly as your scooter.
So, when a regular car starts squeaking, it’s intentional. Manufacturers put a small metal wear indicator tab into the pads, which scrapes against the rotor when the friction material is worn down. It’s meant to scare you into visiting a mechanic. But with scooters, the system works a bit differently.

How to get rid of the squeaking? Choose the right brake pads for your needs
If you don’t plan on descending the Alps and the squeaking drives you crazy, the solution is easy: degrease the rotor and replace the pads. Here is an overview of the 4 types you can choose from:
1. Organic (Resin) – Absolute silence Made from resin and non-metallic materials.

Advantage: They bite great right from the first squeeze, are gentle on your rotors, and most importantly, they don’t squeak at all.

Disadvantage: They wear out quickly. On long descents, they can overheat and lose stopping power. The ideal choice for a relaxed city commute.
2. Semi-metal – The sweet spot A blend of soft organics and hard metal particles.

Advantage: They can handle higher temperatures and offer better mileage than organic pads. They have a good initial bite even when cold.

Disadvantage: It’s a compromise. They won’t survive the same extremes as pure metal and aren’t 100% silent like organics. A great choice for regular riding and occasional hills.
3. Metal (Sintered) – Indestructible power Sintered metal particles. Exactly what you get from the factory on high-performance machines.

Advantage: They can handle anything. They will stop you in mud, rain, or on steep downhills and last the longest.

Disadvantage: They need to warm up and they simply squeak sometimes. However, for heavier riders and aggressive riding styles, they are a must.
4. Ceramic – The premium solution The most advanced compound enriched with ceramic fibers.

Advantage: They don’t hurt your ears with squeaking, are immune to overheating, survive almost anything, and won’t cover your calipers in black brake dust.

Disadvantage: They are expensive. To use them, you need high-quality hardened rotors; otherwise, the extreme heat generated by the ceramics would destroy standard rotors.

Which brake pads are right for you?
The choice of pads depends entirely on where and how you ride. Here are a few tips to help you decide:

Do you ride mostly in the city and want absolute silence? Go for Organic. They are soft and quiet, but expect to change them more often and avoid boiling them during long, steep descents.

Do you go on trips, mixing hills and city streets? Choose Semi-metal. It’s the perfect compromise. You get decent durability, solid heat dissipation, and more tolerable noise levels than pure metal.

Do you ride aggressively, weigh over 90 kg, or love speed? Stick with Metal. They will stop you in the rain, mud, and steep declines. They might squeak occasionally, but they won’t let you down in a critical situation.

Do you want the best on the market and have high-end rotors? Reach for Ceramic. They combine the uncompromising braking power of metal with the silence of organics, but you will have to pay a premium. Plus, factor in the extra cost for suitable brake rotors.
