The battery is the most expensive component on your electric scooter. Often, buying a new battery makes up 60% of the purchase price of a new machine. Yet, many riders unknowingly (or out of sheer impatience or ignorance) send it to the tech graveyard much sooner than necessary. Replacing the entire battery pack will seriously hurt your wallet. Here are 6 of the most common mistakes that will reliably destroy your battery’s lifespan.

1. Draining to Zero and the Memory Effect Myth

Forget the habits from the days of old push-button phones. Modern lithium batteries have no memory effect whatsoever, and there is absolutely no reason to occasionally drain them to zero just to maintain capacity. On the contrary—deep discharging actively damages them. It is also necessary to keep in mind that energy consumption is not linear. Once you drop below 20% capacity, the battery doesn’t decrease gradually; it starts disappearing right before your eyes. Furthermore, the conversion from volts to percentages on displays isn’t instantaneous. It often takes a moment for the load change to register. If you want to see the real and current state of your battery, simply turn the scooter off and on again. In short, charge frequently. When planning a long trip, you naturally think to charge immediately. But risking your commute to work and back on 30% battery? Don’t risk it. Your scooter will reward you.

2. Charging Immediately After an Aggressive Ride

This is the number one killer. You return in the summer from a long ride in beautiful 30°C weather, the battery is scorching hot from extreme load, and you immediately start pumping power into it from the grid as soon as you get home. The charging process itself generates additional heat. Exposing cells to extreme thermal stress like this massively degrades their chemistry. And if you connect a fast charger to such a hot machine, it is absolute madness from a maintenance standpoint and a pure gamble. Always let the scooter cool down for at least 30–60 minutes to room temperature after a ride before you even plug it into a socket.

3. Improper Winter Storage and Phantom Drain

Throwing the scooter into a freezing garage in autumn with an empty battery and returning in spring is a death sentence. Conversely, storing it charged to 100% puts the cells under immense stress. Generally, for long-term storage, it’s ideal to keep the voltage at around 50–60% capacity. But there is one major catch. Premium machines, such as Teverun models, equipped with a Smart BMS (Battery Management System), Bluetooth, or GPS, have a small power draw even when turned off. If you ride regularly, you might not even notice. However, during extended downtime, it becomes apparent that the smart electronics inside are constantly working. When winterizing these models, it is essential to charge the battery to 80% and check the machine at least once a month. If the voltage drops, top it up immediately, otherwise, your battery might quietly die from over-discharging over the winter. Batteries also do not tolerate sub-zero temperatures well. Consider not only how to charge the scooter but also where to store it during winter.

4. Abusing Unoriginal Fast Chargers

Everyone wants to ride as soon as possible, but buying an uncertified “fast-charge” adapter of unknown origin is a massive risk. Plus, you might not even get one with the correct connector on the first try. But more importantly, inadequately high charging currents extremely heat up the battery pack beyond its design limits. While the BMS tries to protect the cells, chemical degradation simply happens much faster. Always use original or manufacturer-approved chargers. Fast charging is a trade-off—you pay for saved time with a shorter overall battery lifespan. Also, realize that when using, for example, a 10A charger, you are not only stressing the battery cells but also loading the connectors and cables, which may not be built for such rapid charging. Temperatures rise, and over time, you can fry your charging port.

5. Chronically Interrupting the Charge Cycle

Many riders panic and unplug the scooter at 90%, thinking they are saving the battery. However, most standard BMS systems balance the voltage of individual cells at the very end of the charging cycle—often only when the green light appears on the charger. If you never complete the cycle, the cells’ voltages can drift apart over time. To avoid this, simply leave the scooter on the charger until it turns itself off once in a while. We highly recommend doing this during the first few charging cycles as well.

6. Plugging in the Charger Correctly

When connecting the charger to the scooter, you need to realize that the scooter is always live (under power), while the un-plugged charger currently has no current. If you plug the charger into the scooter without it being connected to the wall first, an electrical discharge occurs to equalize the voltage. This will burn the gold-plated parts of your charging contacts. You can easily prevent this problem. Simply plug the charger into the wall socket first, and only then connect it to the scooter.

Common Sense Over Expensive Repairs

Batteries on premium machines simply don’t die on their own. In the vast majority of cases, their premature death is caused by the bad habits and human error mentioned above. While it is true that smart electronics like Smart BMS can smooth out many user mistakes and protect the battery, they are definitely not omnipotent. The main thing is to use your common sense and charge when necessary. Generally, batteries handle shorter charging cycles much better. And don’t worry that if you charge the battery by 50%, a full charging cycle will be counted. That’s not how it works. In such a case, only ½ of a cycle is counted, so the battery doesn’t age artificially. Also, don’t forget that modern service diagnostics can read a lot nowadays. A technician will immediately find out if the battery has been deep-discharged. Excuses like “it just broke on its own” simply won’t hold up for destroyed cells, and an unjustified warranty claim will cost you not only your nerves but mainly tens of thousands of crowns. Taking care of your battery isn’t rocket science. Just use common sense, don’t leave charging to the last minute, and follow our advice.
